Steneby Hemslöjdsförening Sweden, 1940s modernist table lamp Scandinavian design

About the Item

A rare table lamp, model 1646, produced by Steneby Hemslöjdsförening in Dals Långed, Sweden, in the 1940s. Crafted from solid beech with a sculptural form, it draws inspiration from traditional Swedish arts and crafts. The lamp is a later example of the "sportstugemöbler" (sport lodge furniture) style, popularized in the 1920s by architects such as Axel-Einar Hjorth. It comes complete with the original Bakelite lamp holder featuring an integrated switch, and includes a white textile lampshade. Marked Steneby H.F. 1646. The handicraft organisation Steneby Hemslöjdsförening has its roots in the early 20th-century revival of Swedish handicraft traditions. This movement, led by influential designer Carl Malmsten, advocated for a return to traditional techniques and knowledge in craft education. One of Malmsten's students, Erland Borglund, began developing woodworking courses for teenage boys in Dals Långed, a small town in western Sweden. In 1929, Steneby Hemslöjdsförening (Steneby Handicraft Association) was established. It soon became a key center for preserving and promoting local craft traditions.
