Studio Ceramic Table Lamp by Bernard Rooke, England
About the Item
A small ceramic totem lamp by Bernard Rooke - London, England 1960s - together with a simple conical shade.
This is an early piece, hand-built with lots of interesting texture and good weight (the later pieces being moulded). The design includes glazed and unglazed sections, with a band of Rooke's hieroglyphic-style symbols. The colours are earth-tones of terracotta and light brown/grey; the circle motif of the main body also appears in the more unusual large totems of the same period.
The ceramic is in good original condition, with minor marks as one might expect from age, use and the hand-making process; felt pads level the base. As is typical for the early pieces the ceramic is unsigned.
Shade
We are showing this lamp base with a simple hessian shade, newly made, using proportions found on lamps of the period. The shade fits through the ring on the lamp-holder as shown in the last image. The lamp can be shipped with or without shade.
Wiring
Original wiring has been removed, and new wiring will be required in the country of install. A new switched lamp-holder is included.
Approximate dimensions:
Ceramic only:
Height: 28cm
Depth: 11cm at base
Width: 15cm at centre
Shade:
Height: 28cm
Diameter: 21cm
Overall, including shade: 57cm
The shade will be removed for shipping.
Bernard Rooke was born in 1938, and studied ceramics at Goldsmiths College in London. In 1960 he set up a workshop in Forest Hill sharing with another pottery artist, Alan Wallwork.
