About the Item

striking table lamp attributed to Kay Fisker, executed in patinated brass and ebonized wood. This lamp exemplifies Fisker’s architecturally informed approach to design, blending functional clarity with refined materials and proportion. Kay Otto Fisker (baptized Kai Otto Fisker, 14 February 1893, Frederiksberg – 21 June 1965, Copenhagen) was a pioneering Danish architect and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, renowned for his nationally shaped interpretation of international functionalism. His work spans architecture, furniture, and interiors, and he played a formative role in shaping Danish modern design. Among his most celebrated projects are: • The Danish Pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris (1925) • Vestersøhus I and II, Copenhagen (1935 & 1938, both listed) • Interiors and furniture for route ships, including M/S Hammershus and M/S Kronprins Olav (1936–1954) • Vintersbølle children’s sanatorium and accompanying chief physician’s residence (1936–1938) • Hegnshusene terraced houses, Brønshøjvej, Copenhagen (1937, with Erik Jensen) This table lamp demonstrates Fisker’s sensitivity to proportion, material, and subtle detailing — a rare survival of his approach to functionalist design in small-scale objects. Its combination of ebonized wood and patinated brass reflects his consistent interest in harmonizing form, function, and material integrity.
