About the Item
Elegant travertine and brass table lamp, attributed to Philippe Barbier (Maison Barbier), Italy, circa 1970. The sculptural design pairs a travertine cube base with a turned travertine bowl and a slender gilt-brass neck, forming a balanced, architectural silhouette characteristic of Barbier’s work for Maison Barbier in Paris.
The travertine is warm beige with natural pores and veining left unfilled, contrasted by softly aged brass. The lamp retains its original Italian B Ticino inline switch and E27 socket, typical of the period when French ateliers such as Maison Barbier commissioned Italian workshops to produce their travertine models.
It is fitted with a vintage rectangular silk-blend shade and edged with double piping — not original to the lamp but period-appropriate and stylistically consistent with Maison Barbier lighting of the era.

The tall, hexagonal base is finished in an ivory crackle glaze, a hallmark of Benlloch wares, and painted freehand in a bold palette of cobalt blue, rust-orange, and cream. Its rich patterning draws on Spain’s historic Hispano-Moresque and Mudéjar traditions, translated here into a vibrant mid-century ceramic form.
Each of the six faces is framed by cobalt ribs and filled with repeating ogee arches, lattice lozenges, and scrolling arabesques. The rhythmic interplay of color and geometry creates a bold yet refined surface, perfectly balancing ornament and structure. The underside bears the hand-painted signature “Benlloch España,” affirming its authenticity as a product of this renowned Manises workshop, active across three generations in the 20th century.
To echo the vase’s architectural silhouette, Amitābha Studio has paired the base with a new bespoke hexagonal lampshade. Crafted in warm Dupion silk in tones of orange, peach, and gold, the fabric’s natural texture harmonizes with the arabesques on the ceramic. A Houlès passementerie trim completes the design, while the shade’s golden glow enhances the lamp’s sculptural presence when illuminated.

The albarello-shaped base, rooted in Aragón’s ceramic traditions, is finished in a white tin glaze and painted freehand in deep green and manganese black—the iconic palette of Teruel pottery since the 14th century.
Panels of decoration unfold across the lamp’s surface: a stylized long-necked bird, swelling seed pods, and a heraldic face within a medallion. These bold motifs, painted with confident brushstrokes, reflect the Mudéjar Revival movement, which reimagined medieval patterns with modern artistry. At the foot, the reddish terracotta clay is revealed, proudly inscribed “PUNTER,” a rare and direct signature from this historic workshop.
To complement the ceramic base, Amitābha Studio has paired the piece with a bespoke lampshade in a green, black, and white tweed weave.
