“Plunger” is a unique handcrafted table950 lamp by Josep Maynou, created using a plunger and basic electrical components sourced from local hardware stores during his travels around the world. Each lamp is a unique piece, assembled by the artist himself using a small set of tools he carries with him in his suitcase. The idea was born from a personal necessity: in many of the guesthouses and rooms where Maynou stayed, he found there was no bedside lamp to read. Rather than accept this absence, he began crafting his own lighting solutions on-site—turning an ordinary plunger into an unexpectedly poetic and functional object. Each Plunger lamp is therefore a record of a specific place and moment in time, embodying Maynou’s improvisational and narrative-driven approach to making.
Josep Maynou (born 1980) studied Fine Arts in Barcelona, the Faculdade de Belas Artes in Porto, and Middlesex University in London. His work blends installation, performance, sculpture, and everyday objects to create pieces that operate simultaneously in the realms of contemporary art and lived experience. Whether it's a rug, a poster, or a lamp, his objects often originate from mundane materials but are transformed through context and intent into symbolic props that support his storytelling. “Plunger” captures this tension perfectly—walking the line between humorous readymade and thoughtful design piece. It is not just a lamp, but an artwork that encapsulates Maynou’s nomadic lifestyle, his resourcefulness, and his ability to see creative potential in the overlooked.
