Unique Scandinavian Modern Ceramic Table Lamp by Munk, Sweden

About the Item

This handmade stoneware table lamp was crafted by Munk Keramik in Enköping, Sweden, a studio active from 1952 to 2005. It features a cone-shaped base with a deep brown glaze, highlighted by four stylized depictions of women holding spears—motifs reminiscent of cave paintings, rendered in earthy tones of brown, black, and white. The surface shows a rich variation in hues, adding visual depth to its sculptural form. The shade, made of tightly wrapped natural fibers, complements the base with a warm, textured presence. Engraved underneath is “Munk Enköping” alongside the Munk symbol. Dimensions: – Base height without fitting: 17.5 cm – With fitting: 20.8 cm – With shade: 32 cm – Diameter: 22.8 cm Let us know if you’d like the EU plug changed to a US or UK plug. ABOUT MUNK KERAMIK Munk Keramik was founded in 1952 in Enköping, Sweden, by Ulla Elisabet Rubensson (b. 1925), later joined in 1954 by her husband Gösta Rubensson (b. 1927). The studio began with a small team of ceramicists and produced a wide range of utilitarian and decorative ceramics, including vases, bowls, and figurines—many of which featured Munk’s distinctive hallmark: stylized, cave painting-inspired motifs. Known for their expressive, earthy designs and rich glazes, Munk Keramik pieces often depicted abstract figures or symbolic forms that connected modern Scandinavian design with a more primitive, pictorial tradition. Ulla Rubensson, also a painter, brought an artistic sensibility to the work that gave the studio’s ceramics a unique identity. The studio remained active until it closed in 2005. Today, Munk Keramik is appreciated for its artistic integrity and contribution to postwar Swedish ceramics.
