Uno Kristiansson Table Lamps, Turned Solid Pine, Luxus Sweden, 1960s
About the Item
A pair of large, sculptural, solid pine table lamps designed by Uno Kristiansson around 1966 and made by Luxus. The body of the design is turned pine wood. White acrylic diffusers sit atop the lamps and original Texolux orange fabric shades cloche the diffusers. Although the form of the lamps is curvaceous and their edges soft, the scale of the lights and the proportions of the shapes used within relate to Brutalist architecture. The amount of wood used in the chunky lights visually warms the design as the wood is not only apparent but attractively grained and patinated. Lamps, diffusers and shades in very good condition. The shades have no difference in color, it´s just the light difference on photos. Specifications: Total height 64 cm, height without shade 44 cm, shade diameter 38 cm.

Swedish designers Uno & Östen Kristiansson, renowned for their lighting and mirror creations, left an indelible mark on the design world from the 1950s to the 1970s. Their distinctive Scandinavian modern style remains highly sought-after in vintage circles. Uno, born in 1925, and Östen, two years later in 1927, likely honed their craft in southern Sweden under the tutelage of their father, who operated Vittsjö Furniture, a business established in 1919. In 1950, Uno founded Luxus in Vittsjö, producing a diverse array of home products, including lamps, furniture, and mirrors, all designed by the brothers. Their collections gained acclaim nationally and internationally, with Luxus introducing a vibrant range of lamps in the 1960s, attributed to Finnish artist Marjatta Metsovaara. Östen presumably took over the family business in 1966, renaming it Östen Kristiansson AB. Though details on its operations are sparse, it likely continued the tradition of craftsmanship. Teak was a favored material for the Kristianssons, though they explored glass, leather, plastic, and acrylic in their designs.
