Vintage Japanese Sumida Gawa Ceramic Table Lamp with American Brass Hardware - Mid 20th Century Illuminate your space with this extraordinary vintage table lamp, a stunning fusion of Japanese craftsmanship and American mid-century design. The base, a late 19th to early 20th-century Japanese ceramic piece in the Sumida Gawa style, features a high-relief dragon motif, with the mythical creature coiled around the rectangular form amidst swirling clouds. The dragon is rendered in intricate detail, with sculptural scales and claws in deep blacks, reds, and golds, accented by hints of blue, showcasing the tactile, folk-art aesthetic of Sumida Gawa pottery. Dragons, symbolizing power and good fortune in Japanese culture, make this base a striking work of art in its own right. The ceramic base has been expertly converted into a functional table lamp, fitted with American brass hardware from the mid-20th century. The brass components by Bryant Electric, Bridgeport, Connecticut, include a double-socket fixture with pull chains, allowing for adjustable lighting, and a central rod that supports the structure. The brass has a warm, polished finish, typical of American lighting design from the 1940s to 1960s, when manufacturers often repurposed Asian decorative objects into lamps for Western markets.
