About the Item

A vintage pair of signed Asian lamps with lionized Shih Tzus or Foo Dogs in a beautifully detailed high relief on the ginger jar shaped form. Each of the lamps is adorned with a leaping Foo Dog against a patinated bronze finished ground with touches of red showing on the patina in some areas. From the Serpent Forge website, “The origins of Foo Dogs can be traced back to ancient China, where they were believed to have spiritual powers and were used as guards to protect against evil spirits. The Chinese term for Foo Dog is "shi", which means "lion" in Chinese. The Foo Dog is a representation of the lion, a sacred animal in Chinese culture, which was believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits. In Buddhism, Foo Dogs are known as "lion of Buddha" or "Komainu" in Japan. They are often found guarding the entrances of Buddhist temples, shrines, and palaces. In Chinese folklore, Foo Dogs were believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits and protect against misfortune. They were also believed to have the power to bring good luck and wealth. They were often placed at the entrance of homes and businesses to protect against evil spirits.” The casting of these lamps also includes a drippy, sensuous design at the top of the lamp - waxy, if you will as though the present day light bulb illumination is actually from a candle and the wax drips are sliding down the smooth sides of the lamp base. The signature is in chop form and is on the bottom portion of the lamp near the feet of the Foo Dog. Each of the lamps is presented on a black finished wood base with a stepped ring style design placed atop a flat top with scrolling leg supports. The lamps have been recently rewired for US households.
