About the Item
A well-proportioned pair of late 19th-century Regency style convex mirrors, each framed in black-painted hardwood with an inner giltwood slip that subtly lifts the curvature of the original convex mirror plates. The design references early 19th-century English forms, though with a more restrained silhouette characteristic of later Victorian interpretations.
Measuring 96 cm in diameter, these large antique convex mirrors are bold in scale but balanced in tone, offering architectural depth without dominating a space. The mirror plates retain their original silvering and display light, even ageing—producing the gentle distortion and patina associated with authentic 19th-century convex mirrors.
Unusual construction on the reverse—featuring painted timber planks, likely reclaimed floorboards, possibly of maritime origin—adds an appealing layer of narrative and texture. These may once have served as ship panelling, lending a discreet nautical character to the design.
The condition is sound. Some historic restoration to the frames and minor age-related irregularities are visible, all consistent with their age and preserved integrity.
Ideal for both period and modern interiors, this pair of black and gilt convex mirrors offers a timeless, versatile presence—whether placed above a fireplace, in a hallway, or framing an entry.
