Antique 19th Century Belgian Liegoise Carved Oak Louis XV Cheval or Floor Mirror

About the Item

This beautiful hand-carved floor mirror was made in Belgium in the late 1800s. The mirror is a fine example of the highly detailed carved oak ornaments that the Belgian region of Liege is known for. The mirror was carved in the asymmetrical Louis Quinze or Louis XV style. The mirror has an abundantly decorated crest that features shell motifs, acanthus, C-scrolls, and flowers. The ornaments were repeated throughout the whole piece. The solid oak back cladding is a beautifully finished piece of wood. The whole mirror was stained and lacquered in a warm brown color and has built up a great patina over the years gone by. The base features sleek wheels that are fully functional and make it easy to move the mirror around. Brass knobs hold the mirror at the desired angle. The facetted mirror plate is authentic to the piece and shows little wear and mist in line with the overall antique appearance of the piece. The mirror plate shows brush strokes in the reflection. This occurred because the paint that was used to protect the silver chemically reacted with the silver.

19th Century French Louis Philippe Mirror in Antique White
Located in Casteren, NL
This beautiful antique French Louis Philippe mirror has an ornate crest on top and floral ornaments in both lower corners. The gadrooned frame has a pearl beading surrounding the outer edge. This mirror is made in the south of France circa 1850 and is an early Louis Philippe mirror. The crest is not made in one mold, but it is composed out of multiple ornaments. Also, the mixture used to cast the molds has a big part of ground cattlebone. Later mirrors, when the demand for such mirror was increased significantly, had crests cast in one mold and the cattle bone was replaced for chalk. This mirror frame has been cleaned from its original golden color. The off-white color is the color of the raw material. The frame has been colored with an off-white patina to smoothen the color. The whole mirror frame now has a pastel white finish with nice patina. The glass has been renewed circa 20...
