Antique 19th century Large French Louis Seize goldleaf gilt patinated mirror
About the Item
This stunning, large Louis XVI mirror was crafted in Northern France towards the end of the 19th century, around 1890. The frame is made of solid pine wood, adorned with an elegant profile and rich ornamentation. The mirror frame features a beautiful gadrooned edge, and its crown is highlighted by a central cluster of grapes, flanked by C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, and floral garlands. A classic beaded border encases the glass.
The frame was gilded using a combination of gold leaf and gold paint, then patinated to enhance its details. The mirror glass is original and exhibits a charming antique patina. A darker spot is visible at the center of the glass, accompanied by numerous smaller, barely noticeable spots scattered across its surface. The glass was silver nitrate gilded and remains in excellent condition, especially considering its age of over 100 years.
In our workshop, the glass was carefully removed from the frame for a gentle cleaning, then securely reinserted. The back of the mirror, made of board material, was also replaced. The backing is not original and was added about 25 years ago, around the same time a few repairs were made to the top corners and the lower frame. These repairs were skillfully executed and left as they are.
The mirror is in great authentic condition, clean, and ready for use.
