Large circa 1820 Louis XV Style Gilt Mirror

About the Item

This breathtaking floor-length gilded mirror features Louis XV-style elements and motifs. The furniture of the Louis XV period is often characterized by curved forms, asymmetry, and lightness. It strayed away from the grandiosity of the Louis XIV Versailles style, often created for more intimate rooms. A palmette with a floral and laurel-leaf festoon crown is centered at the top of the mirror. Palmettes are decorative ornaments that resemble the fan-shaped leaves of a palm tree. It hails back to the Ancient Egyptians and the classic French fleur-de-lis is a variant of the palmette. Acanthus leaves seem to wrap around the inset columns on the side of the mirror, giving it an ethereal impression. This mirror has been gilded with gold using the outdated amalgam method which is a more durable and long-lasting process. However, due to modern restrictions, this process is no longer used, making this mirror a rare art form. Overall, it is a stunning piece that can be leaned against a wall or mounted. Due to its grandiosity and fine detailing, it will give the owner a feeling of prestige and illustriousness when they gaze into it. Repaired: Professional repairs to the moldings and the gilding, especially on the crown molding. One of the leaves on the crown is broken but not too noticeable (see image). The gesso trim is intact but fragile. Weighs about 400 lbs. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor nicks, scratches, cracks, and chips on the mold trim and frame. Wear is consistent with age. Due to the size, weight, and fragile nature of the trim, we recommend white glove shipping.
