About the Item
A large, Napoleon III era (circa 1860), carved giltwood parclose mirror, having all five of its original mirror panels (as is evident by the desirable “sparkle”, caused by the slow oxidation of the silver used to make mirrors at the time). A finely carved and beaded border surrounds the large primary mirror panel, which sits surrounded on all sides by smaller mirrors. The whole is framed with a carved twisted ribbon, richly decorated with medallions, shells, acanthus leaves, and garlands of flowers, and at its crest is a masterfully carved, Rococo-style pediment with a fretwork shell. Each corner displays striking carved pierced designs that connect the thin inner frame to the main outer frame.
This beautiful mirror is over 160 years old, so there are some signs of wear and past minor restorations (as one has to expect on any item this old).
