About the Item
Monumental antique Rococo style carved giltwood mirror
French, 19th Century
Height 294cm, width 226cm, depth 20cm
This large giltwood mirror is an impressive decorative piece rich in both craftsmanship and symbolism. Carved from gilded wood with exceptional attention to detail, the almost 3 meters tall frame is embellished with a harmonious mix of fauna, cherubic figures, and organic scrollwork.
At the top is a pair of finely carved doves, longstanding emblems of eternal love, flanked by gilded foliage that subtly directs the eye to the central design. Extending down the sides are elaborate, branch-like extensions, each adorned with intricately sculpted motifs drawn from nature. On one side there are birds including woodpeckers, while the opposite features fish leaping upwards, creating a vivid representation of both land and water, symbols often linked with prosperity and abundance.
The base presents a lively allegorical scene: two cherubs, modestly clothed in flowing garments, engage in a symbolic battle with a serpentine dragon. Their small hands grasp staffs as they bravely confront the creature, its tail winding around their slender forms. Slung over each cherub’s shoulder are bundles of fish.
The mirror’s decorative elements convey a deeper meaning, where innocence (the cherubs) overcomes evil (the dragon) in protection of life's creations (the fish). This layered narrative is typical of Rococo design sensibilities that flourished during the 18th century and heavily influenced this mirror's conception.
With its grand scale, ornate detailing, and evocative storytelling, this mirror is not only a statement piece but also a testament to the remarkable skill of the artisans who created it.
