Napoleon III floor mirror

About the Item

An exceptionally sumptuous and, at the same time, elegantly imposing large mirror with a matching low console is a true representative of the Napoleon III style, which originated in France and was current in the period from 1852 to 1871, with furniture in this style being popular even outside the borders of France in other European countries. The mirror of architectural structure, with straight lines, is made of lacquered wood in black, and its surfaces are enriched with mother-of-pearl inlays and elaborate decorative compositions in the form of foliate arabesques, executed in a technique known as "Boulle marquetry". On the left and right sides there are tall, slender columns, partly turned in the form of balusters, and partly treated with grooves. The columns have capitals of gilded bronze, of the Corinthian type, which is the most sumptuous type of classical Greek capitals. The lower part of the mirror consists of a low console with a top made of marble with dark green, black and white natural patterns. The console is slightly raised from the ground and is supported by "bun" type feet.

19th Century French Napoleon III Embossed & Gilded Mirror
Located in Dallas, TX
19th century French Napoleon III Embossed & gilded mirror displays extraordinary detail in a celebration of the classical style! Embossing patterns include a bordering all around, with a tier of intriguing foliates, next to a gold bordering and a raised, half-cylindrical molding that is raised from the surface and embossed to depict bundled florals with several types of flowers represented in the detail. Finally, around the original beveled mirror itself appears one last triple tier of gold molding with beading accent. The original silver is starting to show distress at the bottom, typical for mirrors of this age, which to the cognoscenti only adds to the charm and allure! A tailored corbel appears at the bottom on each side as a finishing transitional touch to the surface upon which the mirror is mounted, which can range anywhere from the floor to a magnificent fireplace...
