About the Item
Venezia, oltre che per le arti maggiori, è famosa per la sua decorazione. The mirror is among the most well-known objects of typical use decoration. In the case of mirrors such as this one, the glass is not only blown but also transformed into a mirror through the traditional mercury process. Today this process is in disuse because it is banned due to the toxicity of the material.
The mirror has a simple rectangular shape, with no cymatium, counter cymatium or sides. The four sides of the frame are molded with multiple overhangs. The shape is embellished with flower-shaped coverlets at the four corners. These contain mother-of-pearl elements that look the same but are actually different. Other floral decorations continue along the sides with blue lacquer elements, creating elegant contrasts with the white mother-of-pearl and gold leaf gilding.
