Antique French Renaissance Style Black and Gold Mirror with Carved Ornaments

About
An antique French mirror made in the ancient European Renaissance style.
The frame has a gadrooned edge and pearl beading surrounding the glass. The arched top is decorated with a central positioned serene women's head flanked by elegant Renaissance style ornaments. The whole mirror is ebonized with pale gold parts. The gold was made by the application of silver leaf to the frame. The silver was polished and then coated with a transparent yellow lacquer. Due to the lacquer, the silver leaf gets a pale gold appearance with the typical metallic shine of the leaf. This mirror was made in France and dates circa 1880. The mirror frame has built up a beautiful patina during its lifetime.

- ConditionRepaired: The mirror had some damage on the lower rail. This was repaired and the whole frame was gently cleaned and a clear protective wax layer was applied. The mirror plate was renewed and new pine back cladding was installed to protect the glass. Wear consistent with age and use.
