Carved Oak Mirror on the Theme of the Vine, by Gauthier-Poinsignon, Art Nouveau

About the Item

Carved Oak Mirror on the Theme of the Vine, by Gauthier-Poinsignon, Art Nouveau, School of Nancy, France, Circa 1910. We are honored to present an exceptional piece of character furniture: a large carved solid oak mirror/trumeau, created by the Gauthier-Poinsignon workshops under the direction of Camille Gauthier, one of the masters of Art Nouveau in France, from the School of Nancy movement. This work, dating from around 1910, embodies the very essence of Art Nouveau with its celebration of nature and organic motifs, while being a sought-after rarity among collectors. Piece Characteristics: Carved Solid Oak: This mirror is made from a noble and high-quality wood, offering strength and a natural warmth that highlights the intricate craftsmanship of the carving. Vine Theme: The central decorative element is an elegant depiction of vines, with finely chiseled leaves and grapes in formation, creating a botanical and poetic ambiance that is characteristic of the Art Nouveau spirit. This theme, symbolizing nature and life, is one of the most typical motifs of this period. Design and Practicality: The mirror takes the form of a trumeau, a structure that is both decorative and functional. It also incorporates two discreet shelves, seamlessly integrated into the wooden frame, allowing for the display of decorative objects while maintaining the elegance of the piece. These shelves add a utilitarian aspect while remaining in the refined spirit of Art Nouveau. Beveled Glass: The mirror itself is a masterpiece of reflection and clarity, with beveled glass that adds an extra touch of sophistication and refinement. This detail, often sought after, enhances the beauty of the object and delicately reflects light. Technical Properties and Condition: General Condition: The mirror is in excellent condition, having been carefully restored in our workshop by experts. The relief sculptures have been delicately cleaned, and the wood is in optimal condition. The oak patina, subtly enriched over the years, presents a beautiful warm and deep color, typical of pieces from this period. Mirror: The silvering of the mirror is in good condition, maintaining its shine and reflection without significant alteration. Dimensions: Height: 120 cm – A large size that allows the mirror to become a focal point in a room while adding grandeur. Width: 120 cm Depth: 25 cm Provenance and History: Craftsmanship: This mirror is the work of Gauthier-Poinsignon, from the School of Nancy, an essential reference within the Art Nouveau movement. Period: Circa 1910, a golden period for Art Nouveau, when woodworking reached its peak, particularly in Nancy. This mirror reflects the richness and originality of the time, where vegetal ornamentation was combined with curving, flowing lines. An Exceptional Piece for Art and Design Enthusiasts: This mirror, with its rare character, meticulous craftsmanship, and timeless beauty, represents a prestigious investment. It will enhance any classic or modern interior, adding a historical dimension and an undeniable touch of refinement. Whether you are a passionate collector or a discerning connoisseur, this piece will find its place among your most prized works of art. History: Camille Gauthier (1870-1963) was a French cabinetmaker and designer, recognized for his work in the Art Nouveau style. Born in Norroy-lès-Pont-à-Mousson, Lorraine, Gauthier showed early talent in decorative arts. In 1891, he enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, where he developed his technical skills in cabinetmaking and marquetry. After working with Louis Majorelle, one of the greatest names of Art Nouveau, he opened his own workshop in 1901 with the help of Paul Poinsignon, a renowned upholsterer, and founded the "Gauthier-Poinsignon" company. Gauthier's work is distinguished by his mastery of marquetry, combining floral patterns and natural scenes to create unique pieces, often inspired by nature. His furniture, including desks, sideboards, and display cabinets, is characterized by organic forms and fine details that were emblematic of the Art Nouveau movement. Among his notable works are pieces presented at the 1909 International Exposition in Nancy and the 1910 Salon d'Automne in Paris, two major events for designers of the time. Gauthier was also influenced by Art Deco techniques, which allowed his creations to adapt to the stylistic changes of the post-World War I period. His works are now highly sought after by collectors and are displayed in prestigious museums such as the Musée d'Orsay. Camille Gauthier's pieces are among the most prized by antique furniture enthusiasts. Don’t miss out on this rare item! We are specializing in premium antiques.
