Rectangle giltwood carved wood pagoda Wall Mirror Chinoiserie French circa 1900

About the Item

Gilt hand-carved gilt gold wood Italian chinoiserie pagoda shape mirror depicting etched figural scenes of monks, archers, temples and Chinese or Japanese men. Hand-painted gold chinoiserie design. The scenery with the pagoda-style landscape. The shape of the mirror is reminiscent of an Asian pagoda. The side has two "wings" which flank either side. Mirror depicts multiple scenes which are hand-painted, hand-carved. Japanned figures painted against a black background. Bottom of the mirror includes two English or Italian men archers with bow and arrows. Men wear red caps, red pants and green over garments. Shell scalloped detail and black diamond background. Small carvings of cardinals in the lower corners. Hand-painted in black, ebony, gold, red and green. Sides of mirror include scalloped edges and depict an Asian scene in barefoot men and red kites. Further above on sides, features men in green pants, weapons on a black background with painstakingly carved lines. Top of mirror features two men on the sides making offerings to birds with redheads. Perhaps cardinals. Top of mirror features a man in the center, holding up a tray, red medallion flanked by two wise men or scholars in robes who appear to be holding scrolls. Minstrels on either side with small children. Back features a cream floral pattern overlay and wire hanger. Very heavy and sturdy. A red carnation (as is shown on the top of the mirror) once was a symbol of love and suffering, associated with the blood shed by Christ in Christian art. However, in 15-16-century portraiture, especially in double portraits, it accompanies couples and indicates on their engagement. This flower has become accepted generally, and to this day is attributed to the valour and courage, a revolution, and above all, to the French Revolution. Great for use in a powder room, above a mantel (fireplace), foyer, bedroom or grouped with others as a gallery wall of mirrors.
