Early 19th Century Giltwood Pier Mirror

About the Item

A beautiful early 19th century Regency-period overmantle mirror in its original giltwood frame, featuring an exquisitely and delicately carved scallop shell ornament. Both the bevelled mirror plate and gilding are original, retaining their authentic character and patina that only comes with age. The piece was crafted by William Hollingsworth, a noted carver and gilder based in Hull, Yorkshire. Why we like it: We love this mirror's untouched condition, with its original mercury plate that shows a soft, aged patina, and the gentle wear on the gilding. The finely carved scallop shell at the top is not only an artistic highlight but also symbolic—hinting at Venus and also carrying Christian significance. The original maker's label on the back adds a rare and personal historical detail, seldom found in English furniture of the period. Maker: William Hollingsworth, a carver, gilder, and mirror maker from Hull, Yorkshire, was active from 1826 to 1834. He operated at 2 Queen Street (1826–31) and later at 27 Silver Street (1834), as documented in the Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840.
