A pair of George III Chippendale design carved wood oval mirrors, the moulded frames carved with cabuchon and intertwined 'c' scrolls and acanthus leaf sprays. Finished in aged gesso (not giilded)
These mirrors made by the exceptional workshops of ELG at Sainsburys, which are under the direction of Jonathan Sainsbury, an expert in period furniture and the designs of some of the great makers, William Kent, Robert Adam, Thomas Hope, Matthias Lock, and Thomas Chippendale. ELG at Sainsburys specialise in producing the finest quality hand-carved furniture copied directly or evolved from period examples and pattern books.
ELG at Sainsburys in addition offer a full advisory and bespoke manufacturing service, to include architectural mouldings, door surrounds and decorative items and are able to offer a fully bespoke finishing service to include water gilding, specialist aged paint finishing, all to the particular clients taste.
Working very closely with top international designers, private clients and the National Trust, ELG at Sainsburys work has ranged from super yachts, classical country houses, London and world-wide residences and singular bespoke one off commissions.
The finish of these mirrors reflect the current taste which has moved away from gilding to a more subtle finish. The use of gesso as the base on which gilding was laid, is therefore a natural choice with this in mind. It is possible to locate antique examples of gesso mirrors that have never been gilded, but it is rare to find a single let alone a pair. As a result the pair of mirrors offered here present exceptional value for two mirrors of exquisite carving and subtle sophistication.
