Pair Pier mirrors with Églomisé Panels, 1807–08 [Paul] Cermenati and [John] Bernarda, Salem, Massachusetts (active 1807–08) Eastern white pine, gessoed and gilded, with mirror plate and with églomisé panels 43 9/16 in. high, 24 1/8 in. wide (at cornice), 4 1/4 in. deep (at cornice) The authorship of this pair of Federal mirrors with églomisé panels is established by the presence on the back of one of the mirrors of the label of the firm of Cermenati and Bernarda of Salem, Massachusetts. The label reads as follows: Cermenati & Bernarda, / Gilders and Looking-Glass Manufacturers, / opposite Albert Gray’s Hat-Store, Essex Street, / Salem– / where they keep constantly for sale, at the most reduced / prices a complete assortment of / Looking Glasses–Pictures–Night or / Day Telescopes–Thermometers– / Paint Boxes, Drawing Paper, Pencils, Etc. Etc. Etc. / Looking Glass and Picture Frames made in the / best manner. / Ladies’ Needle Work handsomely framed and / glaized in the most modern style and at the shortest notice. (as quoted in “The Editor’s Attic–Italian Frame Makers of New England,” Antiques IX [March 1926], p. 143). A considerable number of Italian craftsmen, Paul Cermenati, G. Monfrino, and John Bernarda among them, emigrated to the United States in the early years of the nineteenth century. Paul Cermenati is first listed in partnership with Valenti Bernarda at 10 North Row, Boston, in the years 1803–06. In the latter year, Cermenati and Monfrino first advertised their partnership in the Boston Columbian Centinel of February 12, 1806, as “carvers and gilders” at 2 State Street, Boston: P. Cermenati and G. Monfrino Inform their friends and the Public that they have formed a connexion in trade under the name of CERMENATI & MONFRINO at No 2 State-street where they hope a continuance of the generous encouragement lately received at No. 16, Old State House. The label from this enterprise gives an indication of the nature of their business: Ladies needle work fram’d and Glaz’d in the neatest manner. / Cermenati & Monfrino, / CARVERS, GILDERS, PICTURE FRAME and / Looking Glass Manufacturers / No. 2. STATE STREET / South side of the Old State House / Boston / Where they keep constantly for sale a large and / elegant Assortment of Looking Glasses, Prints / & c, from the best Masters in Europe. / Also Telescopes, Barometers and Thermometers / made and Repaired in the / best manner. / Old Looking Glass new Silvered. Their joint venture was short-lived, as Paul Cermenati and John Bernarda placed an advertisement in the Columbian Centinel for January 3, 1807, that, as of December 31, 1806, they had formed a partnership “at the well-known shop No. 2 State street (lately occupied by Cermenati & Monfrino.” Shortly after that they moved their business to Salem, Massachusetts, but their association was, once again, very brief. In an advertisement in the Salem Essex Register for March 9, 1808, they requested their customers to settle accounts, and on April 13, 1808, the same paper reported that “the Copartnership lately existing under the firm of Cermenati & Bernarda is dissolved.” Paul Cermenati continued on his own in Boston. Thus, the label of the Salem partnership of Cermenati and Bernarda on one of this pair of mirrors establishes their date as 1807–08. The tabernacle form of these mirrors is typical of production in eastern New England in the early years of the nineteenth century. The present mirrors are particularly distinguished not only because they are an original pair, but also because of their inclusion of églomisé panels of rustic scenes in black and gold against a white ground.
