About the Item
Charming Swedish Gustavian Shaving Mirror, Transition Style, 1770s
A charming Gustavian shaving mirror from Sweden, dating to the 1770s, retaining parts of its original painted surface, later partially refreshed in the same beautiful tone. The piece is decorated with the Vasa sheaf, the emblem of the Swedish royal Vasa dynasty, along with classical festoon garlands, both hallmark motifs of the Gustavian period.
The upper section of the frame shows remnants of Rococo influence, making this a fine example of the Transition style, where Rococo and Gustavian neoclassicism blend together. The carved crest with mirror insets displays visible cracks (see photos), consistent with the age of the piece, and adding to its authentic 18th-century character.
An evocative and intimate object that embodies the simplicity and elegance of the Gustavian style — perfect for collectors of Scandinavian antiques.

A Gustavian Shaving Mirror in Mahogany & Brass Details. Sweden 1780-1790s.
A beautiful shaving mirror in mahogany (Mahogani Swietania). Made in Sweden during the 1780s-1790s, either during the reign of King Gustav III or his son Gustav IV. The period is highly appreciated for its use of elegant materials combined with a refined and slightly simplified classicism when compared with the pre-revolutionary France, from which the court of the Swedish kings took much influence.
