About the Item

French Charles X Gothic Vanity Mirror and Jewelry Casket, circa 1835 The French Charles X period mirrored vanity box, which dates to approximately 1835–1850, showcases remarkable Gothic design, craftsmanship, and architectural refinement. This museum-worthy piece closely relates to an example held in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The structure features a dramatically arched Gothic tracery crest with intricate pierced fretwork, pointed finials, and a crowned finial at the apex—symbolic of royalist allegiances in the post-Napoleonic era. Supported by ebonized and gilded turned columns, the circular mirror is framed by a rich ormolu bezel intricately cast with floral ornamentation, suggesting the high-quality metalwork typical of royal or noble commissions. The base, veneered in finely figured mahogany, houses a single drawer with its original key and working lock, lined for storing jewelry or personal effects. A perimeter of Gothic arcading in ebonized wood surrounds the plinth, echoing the ecclesiastical architecture of the upper frame and unifying the design with remarkable precision. Dimensions: Overall: 18” high x 11” wide x 8” deep Mirror: 5” diameter Drawer interior: 9.25” wide x 7” deep x 1.5” high A rare surviving example of French Charles X design at the intersection of romanticism, royalty, and revivalist architecture, this piece offers both historical gravitas and decorative impact.
