About the Item
A beautiful and very decorative large size Victorian heart-shaped silver dressing table or vanity mirror made by William Comyns of London in 1895.
The mirror has an elaborate scrolling repousé solid silver face featuring a neo-classical gargoyle to its base flanked by winged angels amongst rococo scalloped arabesques, a faun on either side of the centre of the mirror beneath Bacchus masks, and a pair of winged angels at the top holding a rococo-shaped cartouche (unengraved). The silver mirror is fully hallmarked in the lower right hand corner.
The bevelled mirror plate is original with some very small signs of age that are testament to its originality. The backing is lined in its original navy velvet with a stay to the reverse to make it stand.
