French Louis XVI Trumeau Mirror, Napoleon III Period
About the Item
A very fine full height trumeau mirror in a hand-carved giltwood frame. This large and impressive Louis XVI style mirror features a pediment festooned with swags of flowers and foliage, beneath a crest of knotted ribbon. The oval medallion at its centre, encircled with a 'string of pearls' border, depicts an endearing scene of a mother with her children and their dog, while the mirror plate below features thick, bevelled edges and is surrounded by carved 'continuous ribbon' mouldings. A real statement piece, this charming trumeau would originally have been hung on the narrow part of a wall between two windows or doors, where it would have been shown to best advantage against the wood-panelled walls so popular of the period.
