Large Antique French White Painted Trumeau Boiserie Mirror, Circa 1870

About the Item

Trumeau boiserie mirrors, such as this painted white offering from France, were designed to be placed on a wall in between two windows. The motifs and color palettes of these mirrors would often match the surrounding paneling. Based on the size (seven+ feet tall and over four and a half feet wide), our mirror would have been hung in a large room such as a salon. The inclusion of a floral latticework with canted upper corners that are topped by volute leaves indicates this mirror is in the style of the Regence Period. Also of note is the large foliate medallion that surmounts the lattice, flanked by C-scrolls that seamlessly transition into floral margents; these are traits of the Rococo style that emerged during the reign of the Regent. The shaped glass pane is surrounded by a border of beading set inside thick, protruding molding adorned with foliage. Our white trumeau mirror was crafted circa 1870, combining stucco elements with wood to create a large and beautiful wall furnishing. It can be placed over a fireplace mantel, on top of a long console table, or hung as paneling in a sitting room of any house.

  • Antique Italian Giltwood Trumeau Mirror with Harbor Scene Oil Painting, C. 1780
    Located in Dallas, TX
This Italian trumeau mirror, hand-carved circa 1780, features a 20 ½” H x 38” W mirror set beneath a maritime oil painting. The giltwood frame has angular protrusions in the upper corner, each filled with a small, raised floret. An egg-and-dart border graces the edges of the frame, interrupted by stepped-out plinths at the bottom corners. Both the mirror pane and the painting are surrounded by bead and reel motifs. The wonderfully executed painting depicts a bustling harbor filled with vessels from three different countries. A majority of the crafts feature English flags, while there is one from the Netherlands, with the third representation being a flag from the nation of Catalonia, which would later become an autonomous state in Spain. The blue sky, filled with white fluffy clouds, provides good weather for the numerous boats and ships navigating the choppy waters. Very mountainous terrain can be seen in the background, with a white lighthouse and a blue roof on the shore. In front of the highlands is tall Romanesque architecture comprised of several niches, transoms, and bricked columns topped with flowing greenery. Several men are gathered on the shore, carrying cargo to be loaded into boats approaching the harbor. Our Italian trumeau mirror with harbor scene oil painting...

  • Pair of Large 18th Century French Boiserie Overdoor Paintings
    Located in Dallas, TX
Once installed architecturally in a chateau in Normandy, France, this large pair of overdoors was painted in the 1700s and executed in a technique known as verdaille. Verdaille utilizes various shades of green to achieve a mesmerizing monochromatic effect. This technique’s rich history traces back to the 12th century when it was initially employed to create stained glass for Cistercian monasteries, where colorful art was prohibited, making these overdoors not only aesthetically captivating but also a piece of living art history. Interestingly, there is a hand-written transport note on the back of one of the overdoors (see detail photo) that mentions the paintings were to be shipped to a Madame DeFrance in Paris, at the rue St. Honore corner of la rue Dufour (freight pre-paid). These exquisite pieces are encompassed by wood frames adorned with lavish foliate carvings, beautifully painted in a soothing French gray hue. Each overdoor encapsulates a unique musical scene that transports you to the heart of 18th-century Europe. In the first painting, a man plays the uilleann pipe, a unique instrument with a bellow-driven mechanism that distinguishes it from a bagpipe. The musician has quite an audience, as two women, one cradling a sheep, and four more sheep next to a dog have gathered nearby. In the second painting, witness a captivating moment of courtship as a gentleman kneels before a woman with a tambourine in her hands. He presents a long woodwind instrument, possibly a carnyx, while a faithful dog rests nearby amidst a backdrop of gardening tools. These stunning French verdaille overdoors were once part of a themed boiserie room (most likely green in color and centered around music). They can once again be used to create a theme above a pair of interior doors or they can be hung as a unique set of artwork.
