About the Item

Exceptional 17th-Century French Louis XIV Silver-Gilt Mirror This rare, museum-quality carved oak mirror is a masterwork of 17th-century French craftsmanship. Originating from the Louis XIV period, the frame is richly adorned with à la Berain carved motifs—an intricate decorative style inspired by the ornamental designs of Jean Berain, favored at the court of Versailles. The surface is finished in exquisite silver leaf gilding, gracefully worn to reveal the warm, reddish-brown bole beneath—a traditional gilder's clay that lends depth and authenticity to the patina. Remarkably, the mirror retains its original mercury glass insert, a testament to its age and provenance. Elegant and historically resonant, this piece offers a striking focal point for any refined private interior—whether anchoring a dressing room with regal charm or adding a layer of sophistication to a living space. Dimensions: 21.63 in high (55 cm) x 18.13 in wide (46 cm) x 2.38 in deep (6 cm). Reference: During the 17th Century, the frames had a specific assembly in the corners. The wooden elements are not glued but shaped with a "key" assembly. This technique is called a "Key Frame". Those keys are usually in oak wood and are positioned perpendicular to the cutting of the sides. The back of these mirrors usually has raw and unfinished wood panels, and occasional traces of non-mechanical tools are visible. The patina must be natural and is named "hare dress." It is usually dark brown or beige and is not uniform.
