Georgian 18th Century Chippendale Giltwood Mirror with Carved Double Phoenix

About the Item

An extraordinary example of an English Chippendale looking glass. The rectangular plate with conforming foliate surround and frame lie beneath a molded swan's neck pediment that features two carved phoenix facing each other and holding delicate bellflowers in their mouths. An acanthus leaf cluster adorns the top crown with the bellflower and acanthus leaf motif being repeated throughout. A cherub head is intricately carved into the shaped and scrolling relief base. Gorgeous gilt finish and original glass. W J Sloane NY label on the back. Founded by Wm. Sloane in 1843 and renamed W J Sloane in 1852, this prestigious furniture and rug store was located in New York City and catered to the prominent, including the White House and the Breakers, and wealthy, including the Rockefeller, Whitney, and Vanderbilt families.
