18th century Dutch Mirror Basswood Rococo Material: Basswood, glass, Mirror Design: Louis XV Style: Rococo, Antique, Louis XV, 18th century, Dutch Origin: Netherlands, 18th century Color: Tan Condition: Good with minor missings and repairs. The frame is original from the Rococo period, mid-18th century. The mirror is of a later date, ca 1st half of the 19th century. mirrors The first mirrors were made in ancient times and consisted of polished round copper or bronze discs around the fourteenth century, mirrors were made from glass spheres. A glass sphere was blown which, while still glowing, was provided with a mixture of metals by means of the blowpipe. After cooling, it was cut into pieces and curved mirrors were created. On the basis of this method, the mercury mirror developed at the end of the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, the Venetians were the main suppliers of mirrors It was the French king Louis XIV who established his own glass factory in the 2nd half of the 17th century Founding La Manufacture Royal des Glaces. This is to avoid the high prices of the Venetians. Venetian glassblowers worked in this factory in Tourlaville. The mirrors made here can be admired in the Hall of Mirrors of the Palace of Versailles. At the end of the 17th century, glass was first made in France using the casting process for the purpose of mirrors. The French were the first to make mirror glass in this way. The liquid glass was poured onto a flat table and then rolled out and allowed to cool. Curing took about 10 days. After that, another process of about 6 to 8 weeks followed, during which the glass was ground and polished. It was a costly and labour-intensive production process. The procedure was simplified somewhat in the 19th century with the advent of the steam engine. The German Liebig is the most probable inventor of the silver mirror, for he published an article in 1835 that read: “…when one mixes aldehyde with a silver nitrate solution and then heats it, a reduction occurs, causing silver to settle on the wall of the the vessel and forms a brilliant mirror.” This principle is the basis on which researchers have moved forward. Over time, many processes have been developed and patented And it was the German Bicherou and Pilkington who contributed to the development of the process. In 1925 Pilkington succeeded in partially automating the grinding and polishing process. The next step was the twin process also by Pilkington.
