About the Item
An elegant and authentic 18th century French giltwood mirror in the Louis XVI style, dating to around 1780. This piece is crafted in carved beechwood with its original parcel gilding, richly detailed with classical motifs such as ribbon-tied laurel wreaths, rosettes, and a draped apron with tassels at the base — all emblematic of the refined neoclassical taste of the period.
The mirror plate is original and made with mercury glass, which has developed a naturally distressed surface over time. These shimmering silvered patterns, caused by the oxidation of the mercury backing, create a soft, atmospheric effect that evokes the charm of a faded pastoral scene. These “accidents de mercure” are highly sought after for their poetic and evocative character.
The mirror retains its original wooden back and shows traces of historical wear, including some treated woodworm and age-related cracks, which only enhance its authenticity. The frame’s timeworn gilding adds warmth and texture, making this piece as decorative as it is historically significant.
