About the Item

Hand-carved in the Veneto (or Venetia) region of North Italy, this gorgeous, giltwood mirrored wall sconce is from the mid-1700s. Two arms slot into a hole in the center of a curled leaf at the bottom of the mirror. The curvaceous arms terminate in flat bobeches with elongated cylindrical cream capitals ¾” in diameter. At the top of the mirror is a rising crest composed of molded volutes curving inwards towards each other. The crest is embellished with foliate sprigs and sits on top of a curled leaf in the center of the arching top of the frame. Other motifs include floral bouquets (each side has a distinct flowering display that rests on top of a volute that extends from the frame), more volutes, and foliage. All of the carvings have been arranged in a symmetrical orientation, giving the mirror perfect visual balance. At just about three feet tall and two feet wide, our 18th century Venetian mirrored sconce has a large surface area. It would make a very nice wall-mounted mirror and lighting option for a powder room or hallway.
