1964 Marcel Duchamp 4 Set Mirrors

About the Item

Marcel Duchamp (28 July 1887 – 2 October 1968) was a French painter, sculptor, and writer whose work is associated with Cubism, Dada, and conceptual art. Marcel Duchamp was a pioneer of Dada, a movement that questioned long-held assumptions about what art should be, and how it should be made. These mirrors would be classified as a "readymade" -- a term coined by Marcel Duchamp in 1916 to describe prefabricated, often mass-produced objects isolated from their intended use and elevated to the status of art by the artist choosing and designating them as such. “Readymades,” as he called them, disrupted centuries of thinking about the artist's role as a skilled creator of original handmade objects. Instead, Duchamp argued, “An ordinary object [could be] elevated to the dignity of a work of art by the mere choice of an artist.” These hand made mirrors aren't just mirrors, but apart of the Dada art movement and the exploration of defining the limits of art (if there are even limits). Each mirror has his signature embedded into the glass. The glass has a smokey affect over it giving it more of a surrealist influence. They are in a classic wood, so the mirrors would look good in any setting, in any room. Can be sold separately or together--message for more information. If sold separately, it will be updated on the listing. Pricing is of the 4 mirrors together.
