19th Century French Grain Painted Rosewood and silver leaf Louis Philippe Mirror
About the Item
This Louis Philippe mirror was made in Northern France in the late 1800s. The mirror has a solid pine frame that was smoothened with gesso. The mirror frame is painted to resemble rosewood with a beautiful grain pattern. The most elevated part of the frame has a faux burl rosewood painted decoration. Both inner and outer mold were silver leaf gilt over a black base coat. The silver leaf was polished to obtain a high degree of metallic gloss. The silver leaf was then coated with a warm brown patina to enhance the color. The mirror has the original 19th-century thick glass plate with silver nitrate gilding. The glass plate has many small spots and a few shallow scratches as well as a general mist over the complete surface. The mirror has a new pine back cladding to protect the glass. The piece is without damage and ready for use.
Condition details: The mirror is in good antique condition. The glass was removed and the piece was gently cleaned inside and out.
