About the Item
A finely carved 19th century Italian giltwood mirror, featuring a bold crest surmounted with a scallop shell cartouche flanked by scrolling acanthus leaves. The rectangular frame is richly gilded, showing a warm, time-softened patina with areas of wear consistent with age and use. The simple molding of the frame contrasts elegantly with the exuberant crest, emphasizing the Rococo-inspired shell and volute motifs that were popular in Italian decorative arts of the period.
The original mercury glass plate (now showing desirable age spots and oxidation, enhancing its antique character) is set within the giltwood frame. The back retains its old panel and later hanging wire.
This mirror’s scale and ornamentation make it versatile—perfect for use above a console, in an entryway, or as an accent in both traditional and eclectic interiors.
