Antique French faux rosewood burl and gold-painted Louis Philippe mirror

About the Item

On offer here is a beautiful Louis Philippe mirror that was made in Northern France in the late 1800s. The mirror has a solid pine frame that was smoothened with gesso. The mirror frame is painted to resemble the exquisite wood species that is burl rosewood. The most elevated part of the frame has a faux burl rosewood painted decoration. Both inner and outer molds were gold gilt over a black base coat. The gilding was made by solving gold powder in clear lacquer and was applied to the frame with a brush. The gold has faded throughout the years, now revealing the black undercoat. The mirror has the original 19th-century thick glass plate with silver nitrate gilding. The mirror glass plate is authentic and features a few small spots and a few shallow scratches. The mirror plate was silver nitrate silvered and is in very good condition. The mirror has an authentic pine back cladding that protects the glass. The mirror plate was removed from the frame and the whole piece was gently cleaned from over 150 years of dust. The piece is without damage, clean, and ready for use. Note: The rosewood in this mirror was painted and therefore the mirror is not subjected to CITES.
