About the Item

This elegant French mirror was crafted in the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900, during the transitional period between the Louis XVI Revival and the Belle Époque. At that time, French decorative arts saw a renewed appreciation for fine craftsmanship and detailed marquetry, echoing the refinement of 18th-century design while embracing the richer woods and ornamental accents characteristic of the late 19th century. The frame is made of fine mahogany wood, beautifully decorated with geometric marquetry. The upper section features an exquisite intarsia pattern in optical cube design (often referred to as “trompe-l’œil marquetry”), centered by an oval medallion with a sunburst motif in veneered wood. Along the upper frieze runs a decorative brass border with circular ornaments, a typical feature of the period, while small cross-shaped brass appliqués accent the corners and uprights, adding a refined neoclassical touch. The mirror plate itself is the original silver-nitrate mirror, showing small age-related marks and oxidation spots that confirm its authenticity. A small cluster of silvering spots is visible in the upper-right section of the glass. The mirror has been professionally restored and conserved in our atelier. The frame was carefully cleaned and minor cracks were repaired. The original mirror glass was removed from the frame, both components were thoroughly cleaned, and the wooden frame was refinished with a fresh layer of natural wax. The glass was then securely re-mounted, and the back received a new protective panel to ensure long-term stability and preservation. The mahogany used belongs to the Swietenia macrophylla species (Honduras mahogany) — a wood type not subject to CITES regulations when sourced from antique or sustainable origins. This ensures that the mirror can be safely and legally shipped across borders without restriction. This piece reflects the Neoclassical revival that flourished in France at the end of the 19th century. The fine marquetry, geometric symmetry, and subtle brass ornamentation embody the refined taste and craftsmanship of the Belle Époque. Combining the architectural structure of Louis XVI design with the decorative richness of the late 1800s, it stands as a representative example of French elegance and artisanal excellence from this distinguished period.
