About the Item

This extraordinary piece is a repurposed Jharokha-style architectural fragment from India, hand-carved circa late 19th or early 20th century. Originally an overhanging enclosed balcony or ornamental window frame from a haveli or palace in Rajasthan or Gujarat, this element has been thoughtfully adapted for modern use as a mirror frame. A traditional Jharokha, meaning “a view” in Hindi, this form was an essential element of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture. These intricately carved balconies or windows offered private views into public spaces and were prominent in noble residences and temples. Crafted from solid dark hardwood—likely teak or sheesham—known for its strength and rich grain. The piece features four scalloped (cusped) arches, a signature motif of Mughal design. A central carved rosette sits at the intersection of the arches, anchoring the composition. Elaborate floral, foliate, and geometric motifs cover the surface, showcasing the incredible skill of the artisan. Small figurative carvings or symbolic details embellish the upper corners, adding depth and character. The open arches have been fitted with mirrors, transforming this historic architectural element into a decorative piece. Whether appreciated for its architectural authenticity, ornate detailing, or cultural significance, this antique Jharokha makes a unique addition to any interior. Perfect for eclectic, bohemian, or globally inspired spaces—or even as a dramatic focal point in a minimalist modern room—this piece bridges historic Indian artistry with contemporary decorative use.
