Handcrafted and practical size, 19th century wall mirror. We have a number of beautiful antique mirrors and this is our latest find, but somehow we always have problems shooting photos that do them justice. In real life they always look so much better and especially getting a good photo of the entire mirror in one shot is very difficult. And if we do get it right then the details are never as vivid as they are in real life. Because of its small size this Empire Revival mirror is extra rare and practical. What makes this 19th century mirror extra special is the handcrafted ancient chariot and horses decoration of gilt plaster. The gilt sculpture against the green background above the original mirror makes it stand out beautifully. The original, beveled glass mirror is in very good condition and that is also, because the maker was so clever to place zinc on the back. Since wooden backs attract moist, the smarter 19th century mirror makers used zinc to keep the backs of the mirrors dry so that the silver coating would not corrode.
