Bedroom Mirror - Bridal Mirror - Golden Wood - Period: XVIIIth Century

About the Item

Rare giltwood bedroom mirror (sometimes called a "bridal mirror"). The pediment is adorned with a large rocaille motif centred on a basket, while the inner edges of the central mirror are finely carved with friezes of pearls and lozenges. The original mercury mirror is magnified in the lower part by a décor of scrolls and acanthus leaves with a central rosette simulating a sunflower. Period : 18th century Dimensions: Height: 86.5cm x Width: 46.5cm x Depth: 7.5cm The artists and craftsmen of the Louis XVI style were able to draw inspiration from Greco-Roman art and nature with dexterity and harmony of proportion, making the Louis XVI style known and appreciated beyond its borders. The Louis XVI style is characterised by its straight lines and symmetrical decorations. The frames of the mirror mouldings are always made of oak, beech, amaranth or walnut, and European limewood for the sculpture. The ornamentation is inspired by Antiquity, nature and exoticism, with garlands of flowers, ribbon bows, palmettes, pearls, oves, medallions, cassolettes, foliage, acanthus leaves, olive and laurel leaves, wicker baskets, sickles, beehives, pastorals, shepherds, country scenes, chinoiseries, etc. The carved wood is gilded with gold or painted in pastel tones with gold highlights. The Louis XVI mirror became a key decorative object of its time.

Period : 18th century Dimensions : height : 120cm x width : 69cm Dimensions of the mirror : height : 65cm x width : 46cm When Louis XIV died, the heir Louis XV was too young, it was Philippe Duc d'Orléans (1674-1723), nephew of Louis XIV called "the Regent" who shared the power of the Regency with the high nobility and the parliamentarians. This was a period of transition of great artistic interest for a new, more intimate society with smaller, more varied and more soberly decorated homes. The craftsmen and artists of the time, ornamentalists and cabinetmakers, created less for the monarch and his court. They created for the rich bourgeoisie, financiers and the new nobility. They took on lighter decorative themes such as hunting, fishing and love. This is the birth of a so-called transitional style, the Regency style. It was during this period that large mirrors appeared for decorative purposes above fireplaces, as well as mirrors with closed panels decorated with five-pointed shells or plumes. The carved wood or gilded wood mouldings...
