Contemporary American Scalloped Wall Mirror, Mahogany, Handmade, Available Now

Buyer Protection Guaranteed

Part of Richard Haining's Stacked Collection, the frame of this scalloped mirror was made using reclaimed mahogany. The wood was salvaged from a variety of places, including some from a sinker log from the Amazon River, some from an outdoor patio deck from Eastern Long Island NY, and quite a bit was sourced from a handful of local Brooklyn wood shops. The wood's natural coloring shows off warm tones ranging from red and maroon to light and mid brown, with some paler colors interspersed. There is no stain involved, however, due to this woods inherent qualities, the overall appearance and tone will darken over time.

The scalloped frame was hand-built, stacked piece by piece, layer by layer, creating one of a kind patterns which achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics.

Once complete, the frame was shaped using a variety of handheld tools, and is then finished with a hand rubbed custom varnish. That is then sealed with a custom beeswax oil blend as the final topcoat. This finely honed surface has slight undulations, similar to that of hand built ceramics, inviting one to touch, caress, and take in the pleasure of the woods surface.

Includes the mirror and frame.

About the Maker

Richard Haining is a Brooklyn-based studio furniture maker and artist. Raised in Atlanta and educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he is committed to responsible design that is elegantly hand-crafted with a modern sensibility. Blurring the line between function and fine art, Richard works with designers, trade professionals, and residential clients alike; custom tailoring each piece to suit each client’s specific needs. Whether creating a decorative vase, a custom cabinet, or executing a client's design, Richard’s meticulous attention to detail results in finished pieces that are both utilitarian and beautiful. Much of his current work is directly influenced by the over-abundance of waste and scrap wood being discarded around him. He finds beauty in the knots, century-old nail holes, mineral stains, and other “defects” that are part of that tree’s history, a fingerprint of time since passed, a natural beauty to be celebrated. These locally salvaged remnants became the building blocks for his ‘Stacked’ collection of decorative vessels and furniture pieces. The one of a kind patterns created by the tiny stacked wooden pieces achieve a quality reminiscent of mosaic tile work, basketry, and ceramics. In a world that tends to shun manual labor, Richard finds pure joy in the art of working with his hands. The ritual of creating each individual piece is a very gratifying experience for him, and it is his wish that the recipients of his work experience the same delight.
