Dutch 19th Century Baroque St. Patinated Pressed Metal Mirror
About the Item
An most attractive and large scale Dutch 19th century Baroque st. patinated pressed metal mirror. The central original beveled mirror plate is surrounded by a foliate decorated band with corner and mid section reserves. Each pierced reserve is elegantly designed with foliate scrolls amidst buds and blossoming flowers. The patinated metal frame, with embossed sculptural decorations, is handcrafted using a technique known as “Repoussé”. Repoussé is when the metal (in this case either copper or brass) is shaped by hammering from the reverse side, creating decorative elements in low relief when viewed from the front. At the top is the most decorative pediment shaped pierced crown with more of the same elegant floral scrolled designs.
