Fine Water Gilt Mirror in the Louis XVI Style

About the Item

This large and impressive mirror completely water gilded in the matte and burnish technique was made in France circa 1870. The divided bevelled edge plate is the same top and bottom and is surrounded by a well-carved acanthus border. The side carved uprights are of ribbons tying flowers and foliage. The arched upper section is topped by a deep egg and dart carved top rail centered by a further ribbon and bow. All of the raised work is carved wood, not composition, and is then gessoed and gilded. The quality and fine finish of the gilding is obvious even to a casual observer and remains in very good shape though it has expected losses for age and use, as well as a small crack to the carving in the upper section as wood, does sometimes shift and change shape.
