French early 19th century Louis XIV st. Giltwood mirror
About the Item
A striking and monumentally scaled French early 19th century Louis XIV st. Giltwood mirror. This impressive double framed mirror, with all original gilding throughout, stands on two lion's paw feet attached to very finely carved pierced decorations with blooming flowers and scrolling acanthus leaves which flank the central reserve of a seashell. The mid section displays a wonderful array of scrolling foliate carvings with playful cherubs above. The original mirror plates are set within a crest shaped frame with finely detailed scrolling patterns and intertwining carved bands within the smaller scale inner frame. The arbalest shaped top crown has inward facing Sphinxes on either side with blooming flowers, scrolling movements, and trophies decorated by battle helmets leading up to the top reserve. The elaborate top crown displays two winged cherubs flanking a scrolling scallop shaped crest. All original gilt throughout.
