George I Gilt Gesso Pier Mirror with Swan's Neck Pediment and Carved Decoration

About the Item

An early 18th century George I giltwood pier mirror with carved decoration and broken pediment. The original beveled rectangular mirror plate with rounded top corners is set within a giltwood frame carved with a palmette frieze surmounted by a swan's neck pediment with foliate carvings on a punched ground. The face of a putto adorns the crest terminated in a carved shell, echoed three times on the scalloped apron. This Georgian gilt gesso carved mirror, evincing the emerging Neo-Palladian style popularized by British architects in the early 18th century, is a true statement piece that could create a sumptuous focal point between windows in any home.
