Large Late Louis XV Giltwood Mirror
About the Item
Rare Late Louis XV Giltwood Mirror 'A La Grecque'
The divided rectangular plate surmounted by a trophy cresting shaped as an urn flanked by flowering vases on each side and hung with pendant bellflower garlands.
By its decoration and shape, this mirror reflects the new neo-classical gout Grec style introduced in the 1750s by the architect Louis-Joseph Le Lorrain reacting against the whimsical 'rocaille'. Probably working in collaboration with a marchand-mercier such as Simon-Philippe Poirier, Le Lorrain's gout Grec style was first realized in the designs for the celebrated suite of furniture supplied for the Parisian hotel of the amateur Ange-Laurent Lalive de Jully circa 1755 - a desk part of this suite can be admired at the chateau de Chantilly.
Our mirror displays all the characteristic elements of that early style, acorns, urns, swags and of course straight lines.
