Pair of Large Italian Rococo Giltwood Mirrors (Girandoles)
About the Item
Pair of Roman Rococo Giltwood Mirrors (Girandoles), each shaped plate within a cartouche-shaped frame surmounted by a pierced fan-shaped cresting carved with bunches of grapes, flowerheads, scrolls, and foliage, flanked by scrolls, the apron with two scrolling candle branches. Electrified.
Girandole mirrors became a major source of light for luxurious homes. Because of the reflection in the glass, with the added candle arms and candles, a Girandole mirror could light up the entire space, especially when used in pairs. Combined with the gilding all those elements contributed to increase the throw of light. The carving, exuberant in the case of our pair, further contributed to give the impression of a great interior. Pairs of these mirrors were often situated on either side of a fireplace in the drawing room of a house.
