Large Swedish Modern Mirror in Solid Pine, Glas Mäster Markaryd, Sweden, 1960s

About the Item

This striking, large mirror was produced by Glas Mäster in Markaryd, Sweden, in the late 1960s. This generously sized rectangular mirror can be placed as floor mirror and can also be installed as a wall mirror (hanging wire is installed on the reverse). The sculptural, carved frame is executed in solid pine wood, with a naturally developed patina over time. The frame is a great combination of the more rustic, cottage aesthetic of the Swedish Modern era and the more expressive, brutalist carved style of the wood. The mirror is in good original condition, the wood with a natural patina and minor wear consistent with age. The mirror glass in overall good condition with 2 small light scratches. Swedish Modern designers working in the same era/style include Axel Einar Hjorth, Carl Malmsten, Göran Malmvall and Roland Wilhelmsson.

Nordiska Kompaniet 'Hytte' Armchair in Solid Pine, Swedish Modern, 1940s
By Axel Einar Hjorth, David Rosén, Nordiska Kompaniet
Located in The Hague, NL
This rare armchair was produced by the Swedish company Nordiska Kompaniet in the early 1940s. It belongs to the 'Hytte' series, which is documented in several NK catalogs and advertisements from the time. The Hytte series was a continuation of Axel Einar Hjorth's Sportstugemöbler ("sports cabin furnishings"), a collection of pinewood furniture designed for country homes. After Hjorth, designer David Rosén carried on this style, creating several series for Nordiska Kompaniet. Crafted entirely from pinewood, the chair features club-shaped, tapered legs connected by stretchers, a slatted and slightly curved backrest, and carved armrests. It is versatile and can be used as a desk chair or an elegant side chair. The chair remains in completely original condition, with a natural and even patina on the pinewood. It shows minor wear consistent with age and use. One of the four furniture...
