About the Item
Lorenzo Burchiellaro (b. 1933)
An arresting full-length modernist wall mirror by Italian sculptor Lorenzo Burchiellaro, in etched and formed aluminum. A long, three-dimensional rectangular frame composed of two dynamic ribbons, beautifully curved like waves, weaves in front of and behind the glass, casting dramatic shadows on the wall. The aluminum's textured surface is etched with hundreds of tiny, patterned arcs, interlaced in rows of varying size, causing light to ripple and dance. At once brutalist and playful, the work is an excellent example of the artist's complex sculptural engagement with material.
A master craftsman and tireless innovator, Burchiellaro had a career-long love affair with metals. By carefully etching, brushing, and applying experimental oxides, acids, and patinas to them, he transformed their surface, texture, and feel, revealing the soul and depth of an element often considered cold and impersonal and creating objects of pleasurable, but complicated, tactility and joy.
